What education is needed to become an animal caretaker?

The veterinary science degree generally takes 5-7 years to obtain after high school; 5 years for a bachelor’s degree or 7 for a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree respectively. Many universities now only offer post-graduate entry in which case students are required to obtain a bachelor’s degree before applying to veterinary school.

Veterinary surgeons work in a wide range of fields as general practitioners in either a small animal, large animal or mixed practice. Veterinarians work with a large range of species and can perform an array of tasks including medicine, surgery, imaging, behavioural consults, dentistry, and reproductive work. Most veterinarians work as clinicians in their local communities, however there are also many veterinarians that work in academia or industry.
