There’s no doubt that the “how and when” of retirement has changed significantly over the years. One of the ways retirement has changed is the number of seniors over 60 who still wish to work part-time after leaving full-time employment, whether it be for extra money or to get out and stay active in their older age.
Jill Weeks is an author and radio contributor on retirement
Researching people doing different and interesting things in their ‘retirement’, Jill Weeks has the chance to hear a wide range of stories and experiences.
“The main reasons people want to work after 60 are to have something to do, to help with finances, because they don’t like retirement, for a chance to meet people, or a chance to learn new skills.”
Jill recalls one man who “went from a career in IT to ‘retirement’.”
“Another person retired and then met up with a contact who mentioned he was so busy in his work (manufacturing) that he needed a second pair of hands to help out. As the person had a background in manufacturing, he accepted.”
“Soon the retired person was asked to help out in another workplace…and on it went. So, the person started a small business, ‘locum management’ (business babysitting), with his wife.”
“They were so popular ‘that we had trouble taking holidays’. They were wanted for their skills and experience.”
How retirement is changing in Australia
The qualifying age for the Age Pension is slowly being increased, with the new qualifying age set to be 67 years by 2023.
People are retiring later in life according to the Australia Bureau of Statistics, who found the average retirement age from full-time work in the last five years to be 63.
They are living longer and having to wait longer for financial help. It’s no surprise that many seniors over 60 want to keep active in their community and earn extra money through part-time employment!
As an older worker, part time work makes it easy to keep enjoying the perks of retirement. And if you choose a job that reflects your skills and talents, you’ll find a lot of satisfaction.
If you’re looking to leave full-time work or you already have, we’ve come up with a list of the 11 best jobs for seniors over 60 to help with your job search. How to get the job you want
Once you’ve decided on the kind of role you’d like, there are a few ways you can increase your chances of getting a job quickly.
Undertake any necessary training
For some jobs, a qualification is mandatory in order to get a job. But even for roles that don’t explicitly require one, it’s still a good idea to undertake the recommended qualification to make sure your resume gets noticed.
Many qualifications will also offer the opportunity to go on a work experience placement to get some experience. So, as well as learning crucial skills, you’ll also get to put them into practice, which will make you a stand out candidate.
Prepare any extra certifications
It’s a good idea to scroll through job boards and find common requirements so you can get them in order in advance. Things like:
- A working with children check
- First Aid Certificate
Having these things obtained and on your resume is a big standout for an employer. It means you’ll be able to get started almost straight away, and also speaks to your sense of initiative.
Modernise your resume
This is the most crucial step in finding a job. You’ll want to update your resume with any new relevant qualifications and certifications, but you might find you want to overhaul it completely. Effective modern resumes should be one page (maximum), and should only include experience relevant to the job you’re applying to.
It’s wise to cull anything older than your previous job that isn’t relevant to your new role because it’s unlikely an employer will read through it all. Instead, focus on key skills and personal attributes you’ll bring to the role, and highlight a personal passion for the field you’re about to enter.
Overcoming age discrimination on your journey
If you’re worried about encountering ageism as you apply for jobs, the first thing to know is that your feelings are valid, and you’re not alone. Although it’s illegal for employers to discriminate on age, it’s still an insidious barrier that exists in many industries.
Hopefully it helps to know that this list of jobs is based on roles that commonly attract and employ older workers. They’re jobs that you’ll be able to thrive in, even without experience. In these roles, personal qualities like a caring nature, great communication, creativity and passion are more important than experience.
You’ll also be able to bring experience from your previous career and impart it in any of these roles.
Worried about encountering ageism on your search for a new job?
This guide will prepare you for everything.
