Online Sales Representative Job Description
A sales representative is someone who sells products or services to businesses and organisations. They work, as a part of a sales team or individually, to persuade them on the benefits of the product, along with answering their clients’ questions based on their pitch, with a firm understanding of economics and business practices. As the front line in customer service, your job is to give a good first impression to potential customers.
Sales agents usually work full-time and are typically considered to be an entry position, working approximately 44 hours per week. Since this position will be online, your hours may be more flexible than a typical sales job. The job outlook for the sales industry looks good, with a low unemployment rate.
So, to summarise, an online sales representative is very similar to a regular sales career, only the former is more likely to work from home and the majority of their online sales are from cold calling, sales processing online, responding to emails, and online messaging. Some duties that a typical sales agent would do may not apply to you as an online sales representative. For example, you’re likely not to travel to different locations for a sales opportunity if you’re working online.

Education and Experience Needed to Become an Online Sales Representative
Strictly speaking, you only need to complete high school to have a chance of securing this position. However, in today’s job market, it’s likely you’ll need to have experience and/or some form of education relevant to the field under your belt. Many companies prefer their candidates to have a bachelor’s degree, particularly in an area like marketing.
Also, depending on what kind of products you’re selling, you might need a degree to help you understand the product. For example, if your job requires you to sell scientific products, a science degree can help you describe the product, making you a valuable asset to the company you work for. Typically, these courses will take you three years to complete full time. Online courses are also useful in that regard, as they can hone in on necessary skills such as managing customer relationships.
Gaining experience in this area is clearly a huge help, though again, not necessary. It doesn’t necessarily have to be sales experience either. If you had a job that required you to communicate with many people on a regular basis or that involved a certain amount of negotiation (e.g.: a job in retail), then that could increase your chances of landing a job interview. However, keep in mind that some job postings may ask for a particular qualification or a number of years of experience. They may also require you to already have familiarity with software and phone systems.
Any sort of training that is relevant to sales representatives will apply to online sales representatives. If you’re worried about learning how exactly to process online sales, there’s no need. Many jobs will provide you with the online formal sales training you need to perform effectively.
Much of what determines your success in a job interview is presentation. You have to sell yourself as an outgoing and confident personality since these will be the traits necessary to persuade clients into buying your product.
