You’ve likely had your heart set on your dream course for months or even years. Pursuing your passion now will mean you’re ready to dive into your ideal job as soon as you complete your studies and the market stabilises. If there feels like there’s a gap in your life, you can’t stop thinking about your dream course, or you feel like you’ll be stuck in a rut if you don’t level up, it’s clear that you’re ready to start studying.

There’s now a plethora of online courses for people to take, meaning many people around you are likely to be upskilling already. Bravely stepping into the course you’ve always wanted to take will give you a competitive edge, allowing you to emerge fully skilled-up as the Australian economy recovers from its recent dip. And what better way to come out of lockdown than with a whole new qualification!
There's no shortage of great courses to get stuck into
Online education and short courses are now readily available, gaining popularity over recent years. Make sure to choose an established provider who has a track record of providing great student support, course materials, workplace coordination and top-notch e-learning platforms. You could even use this time as a chance to start a full-time degree, getting a few subjects under your belt before the school year starts in February.

Taking the leap and learning to fly
Katy, 27, used to work on cruise ships, and had suddenly lost her job.
When she lost her job she set about making a change in her life by taking on a full-time Hospitality Management degree.
Here’s how and why she decided to take the plunge.
Taking the leap and learning to fly
After losing her job in the cruise ship industry, Katy found that it was extremely difficult to land a new job:
“I have never had trouble getting a job before – this was actually the first time I had been unemployed for more than six weeks since I was about 14 years old.
“So after a while of this and feeling very disheartened, I decided I was going to get a Bachelor Degree to back up my experience. I was accepted into the Bachelor of Business – Management course, which is what I am working on now.
“Once I made the decision to study, a lot of things fell into place and now I work in a café and study part-time, as well as run my new small creative business ‘Nomadic by Nature Art and Photography’ on the side.
In the New Year, I also hope to transfer my Bachelor into Hospitality Management to continue my study path towards my career goal of becoming an event manager.”
Did you experience the pesky feeling of doubt when making this life change?
“Yes, I had a lot of doubt about whether I could pull this off, I still do (though the voice is a little quieter now at least!).
“I have never been what you would call academic, and apart from the TAFE Diploma I got back in 2014 (which feels like a whole different ball game to university) I hadn’t done any studying since my HSC in 2011.
“I was very concerned that I wouldn’t be able to write at the level I need to, or study effectively enough to pass the subject, but so far so good!”
Katy also tackled some of her doubts by preparing beforehand:
“I did some free classes available through my university before I started and managed to get enough of an understanding to get started.”
What have you enjoyed most about your learning journey thus far?
“I have really enjoyed seeing this other side of myself come out! I am dedicated to keeping up to date with the work and am striving to improve and take on board feedback, I’m really proud of myself when something finally clicks that I was having trouble with.”
