Selection Criteria Response: Ability to Work in a Team Environment
When you’re completing your job application, you might come across something called selection criteria.
These are the particular skills and qualifications you need to have in order to be eligible.
Keep in mind that this is different from anything that you’d include your resume and cover letter, so you’ll need to attach your answers in a separate document.
This is an integral part of the selection process: if you can’t prove that you fulfil these selection criteria, the hiring manager can’t move your application on to the next stage.
Selection Criteria: Examples and Templates
Selection criteria can be a critical part of the job application process. Make sure you respond to them in the right way with our examples and templates.
What Does ‘Ability to Work in a Team Environment’ Truly Mean?
While it may seem self-explanatory, the selection panel is looking for some things in particular for this key selection criteria. Mainly, they want to see that you have the appropriate skills which make you a team player. These include:
- customer service skills
- organisational skills
- analytical skills
- decision-making skills
- communication skills
- time management skills
- interpersonal skills
- problem-solving skills
- leadership skills
- teamwork skills
What You Should Include In Your Response
Provide Relevant Examples
Draw on your previous examples of when you worked in a team environment. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a work example; many choose to include their experiences from high school or university. When providing specific examples, ensure that you mention what your role was, the timeframe which you had, and how exactly you collaborated with your team members (e.g.: through team meetings).
Mention Your Achievements
If you’ve achieved a high score on a project or the task you completed in a previous position was well-received, make sure to include that as well. Describe the details of the project and how you went about achieving it, along with any positive feedback you received by previous employers or teachers. It’s proof that you’re highly skilled in the relevant areas.
Include Your Thoughts on Teamwork
Outline the importance of teamwork and how it’s necessary for a company to run smoothly. This should only be a couple of sentences long, however. Most of your response should revolve around your claims and evidence that backs up these claims.
Make Sure To Proofread Your Work!
This is relevant to everything that you send to a potential employer. Rectify grammatical and spelling errors, and think to yourself: is this the best way to convey this information? Is it written professionally? Have you been honest? While you might feel tempted to exaggerate to meet expectations, it’s better to be accurate, especially considering the interview process. Give yourself enough time to brainstorm and look over your response. You never know what ideas you might come up with later on.
