JobTrainer: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started
Many have been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with school leavers, job seekers and casual workers being unsure of their next steps.
The government’s JobTrainer package is intended to help Australians upskill to secure a new role. Here’s what we know about the initiative so far.
What is JobTrainer?
The Australian Government has partnered with some state and territory governments to establish a $2 billion JobTrainer Fund. The aim is to help young people upskill and secure stable jobs in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Who is JobTrainer for?
JobTrainer is for people who would like to complete an accredited diploma, certificate or short course and meet one of the below criteria:
These free or low-cost training places will be available until September 2021. JobTrainer is currently available in SA, WA and NSW, with implementation varying across the states and territories.
$1.5 billion of the JobTrainer package is aimed towards keeping those already in apprenticeships and traineeships employed. The remaining $500 million will be allocated for vocational education and training courses, aimed at those looking to upskill to secure a new job.
The objective is a more future-ready workforce, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison commenting that “the jobs and skills we’ll need as we come out of the crisis are not likely to be the same as those that were lost.” In his words, the “package will be essential as the economy rebuilds so that people looking for work can reskill and upskill for in-demand jobs, provide school leavers with a pathway into their careers, and ensure businesses are able to get the skilled workers they need.”
What kind of providers are offering JobTrainer funding?
JobTrainer will fund over 340,000 training places to skill up workers for in-demand jobs. These places can be provided by TAFE, public, not-for-profit and private education providers.
Funding will mostly be allocated to courses that address the skills needs identified by the National Skills Commission, such as those in healthcare, social assistance, manufacturing and wholesale trade.
